ABSTRACT: In the second half of the 19th century, low agricultural productivity, along with the gradual implementation of the liberal institutional architecture and changes in the world exchange system, favoured the resurgence of an extensive debate on rural properties in Portugal. In the wake of the first discussions that took place following the implantation of the liberal regime in 1820, this dispute focused on the conditions underlying the formation of agricultural property, the nature of the forms of exploration, in particular the prevailing bonds, without forgetting the uses of the soils and its modernization. This article makes a contextualized analysis of the different political perspectives expressed by the Portuguese, monarchist and anti-monarchist parties on this issue. Special emphasis is given to the impact of Fermín Caballero’s thinking on the foundations developed by the Portuguese landowners.
