About the Faculty
The Faculty of “Artes Liberales” was established in 2012 following the transformation of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research “Artes Liberales”, which had been founded in 2008. The Institute itself succeeded the Centre for Studies on the Classical Tradition in Poland and East-Central Europe at the University of Warsaw, which had been operating since 1991.
The Faculty of “Artes Liberales” is a centre for interdisciplinary research in the humanities. It initiates and coordinates interfaculty, interuniversity, and international study programmes connected with interdisciplinary research at all levels of higher education.
The Faculty’s multidisciplinary academic community brings together scholars representing a wide range of disciplines, including literary studies, cultural studies, history, philosophy, sociology, psychology, political science, art history, law, ethnology, archaeology, and theatre studies.
The Faculty of “Artes Liberales” works closely with other University of Warsaw units engaged in the broadly understood humanities and cooperates with academic institutions in Poland and abroad. For more than 20 years, it has offered degree programmes in philology and cultural studies, including Cultural Studies – Mediterranean Civilization and Modern Greek Studies. Since the 2017/18 academic year, the Faculty has also offered a degree programme in Human-Animal Studies, established in cooperation with the Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Psychology.
The Faculty includes the Collegium Artes Liberales (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences), which specialises in interdisciplinary education across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, with a strong emphasis on international cooperation. Together with the Faculty, the College offers the unique Artes Liberales degree programme, whose curriculum draws on the experience of leading European and American universities.
In cooperation with the Centre of Migration Research, the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” offers the English-language Master’s programme Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Change: the Mediterranean and Other European Borderlands (ISSC). It also co-organises the Migration Studies and New Societies programme within the 4EU+ Alliance, in partnership with universities in Prague and Milan.
