Biogram
Dr Andrew Green is an anthropologist, ethnomusicologist, and popular music scholar, who works principally on Mexican music. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Warsaw’s Faculty of Artes Liberales, having previously taught and researched at the University of Glasgow, University of the West of Scotland, and Royal Holloway, University of London. He received his PhD in Ethnomusicology from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2016, and was a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow between 2018 and 2022. He has received research funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Narodowe Centrum Nauki, the Leverhulme Trust and the Scottish Funding Council.
Focusing on musical engagements with politics and activism in Mexico, Dr Green has published work in peer-reviewed journals including Cultural Sociology, Cultural Studies, Media, Culture and Society, Popular Music and Society, Ethnomusicology Forum, Popular Music and the International Journal of Cultural Policy. His recent projects critically examine histories of music censorship during Mexico’s transition to multiparty democracy, and the intersection between sound, social action, and environmental restoration. He is committed to research which engages activist praxis as a source of new kinds of knowledge about, and in, the world, expressed in part through music, sounding, and listening.
At the University of Warsaw, he is the Principal Investigator on a project funded by Narodowe Centrum Nauki entitled “Sounding Out Survival: Deforestation and Sound Practices in the Ajusco Green Belt”. This project engages the audible aspects of deforestation and reforestation, in a forested zone in the south of Mexico City.
